SOLIDWORKS users may experience frustration upon encountering the error message “Could not obtain a license for SOLIDWORKS Standard.” This issue is commonly linked to a failure in connect to the license server. In this article, we will identify the typical causes of this problem and provide a detailed guide to practical solutions for restoring access.

Understanding the Error – Could not obtain a license for SOLIDWORKS Standard.
The error message “Could not obtain a license for SOLIDWORKS Standard” denotes that the client machine is unable to communicate with the SolidNetWork License (SNL) manager on the server. This may happen due to different reasons such as network issues, firewall settings, or server configuration problems.
Common Causes and Solutions
1. Network Connectivity Issues
This kind of issue happens when the client machine cannot establish a connection to the server. We must ensure that both the client and server machines are connected to the same network. We can test the connection by pinging the server from the client machine. Open the Command Prompt and type ping <server_name>. If we receive a response, the connection is established. If not, check your network settings and cables.
2. Firewall Settings
This type of issue is also caused by the Windows firewall or other security software, which may be block the communication between the client and server. To resolve this issue, add inbound and outbound port exceptions for the SNL manager in the Windows Defender Firewall. The SNL manager communicates across ports 25734 and 25735. To set up port exceptions, follow these steps:

Step:1 Open the Windows Defender Firewall settings.

Step 2: Select “Advanced settings” and then “Inbound Rules.”

Step 3: Create a new rule for TCP ports 25734 and 25735 and repeat the process for “Outbound Rules”.
3. SNL Manager Service Issues
Sometimes, theSNL manager service on the server may not be running or may have encountered an issue. We must check the status of the SNL manager service on the server. Open the Services application, locate the SNL manager service, and ensure it is running. If not, start or restart the service.
4. Version Mismatch
If the client and server machines may be running different versions of SOLIDWORKS, we can’t connect the license to the server. We must ensure that the SNL manager and SOLIDWORKS installations on both the client and server machines are of the same version. If there is a version mismatch, update the installations to the same version.
Encountering the “Could not obtain a license for SOLIDWORKS Standard” error can be quite inconvenient; however, by following the appropriate troubleshooting procedures, we can rectify the problem and resume our design activities. By examining network connectivity, firewall configurations, SNL manager service problems, and version discrepancies, we can facilitate a seamless and uninterrupted experience with SOLIDWORKS.
