In SOLIDWORKS 2017, we now have a new feature called as stress hot spot diagnostics, to find out the stress singularities based on the stress values between adjacent elements. The peak stresses in the region of concern can sometimes be attributed to stress singularities due to geometry features such as sharp corners, point loads, or fixed boundary conditions.

SOLIDWORKS Simulation – Stress hot spot diagnostics

Stress singularities are divergent in nature, meaning that by reducing the mesh size, the value of stress singularities increase to the theoretical value of infinity. True stress concentration values are convergent in nature, and they reach a steady value as you refine the mesh.

The first thing we always notice in the results are very high stresses in the tab. With SOLIDWORKS 2017, we can now use make use of Stress Hot Spot Diagnostics to understand if these stresses are real or possibly caused by the simulation setup or model simplification. Therefore, saving our valuable time in probing the entire model. In this case, we find very high stress on a sharp corner where a fillet would exist in the injection molded part.

When stress hot spots are detected, you can view these areas of the model with a stress hot spot plot which shows the variation of the von Mises stresses. You can specify a custom color (default color is gray) for stress values larger than the threshold value that triggers the hot spot detection.

This immediate feedback gives you great confidence in the next steps required to simulate the problem with greater accuracy and saving our time.

In the previous blog, I had discussed about handling the stress singularities and how to avoid them.
