How to resolve issue in writing SOLIDWORKS session data to the journal file?

How to resolve issue in writing SOLIDWORKS session data to the journal file?

SOLIDWORKS Warning Message: “A journal file could not be created. Auto recover will not work. Another session of SOLIDWORKS may already be running on this machine”

a journal file could not be created solidworks

One of the common issues faced is the journal error where SOLIDWORKS is not able to write SOLIDWORKS session data to the journal file.

Resolve issue of “a journal file could not be created “

The most common cause as indicated in the error message is that, there are two SOLIDWORKS sessions running simultaneously. Since the first SOLIDWORKS session writes to the journal file, the second SOLIDWORKS session cannot overwrite the same journal file, hence when you start the second or subsequent session you will get the warning message pop-up as shown above.

If above cause is not the issue then, another common cause is insufficient permissions to the journal file location. To find out the journal file location, check the following registry key: Under “regedit”

“HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SOLIDWORKS\SOLIDWORKS 20XX\ExtReferences\SOLIDWORKS Journal Folders”

a journal file could not be created solidworks

In Windows Explorer, browse to this folder (Usually if not changed journal file will be stored in “C:\Users\[User-Name]\AppData\Roaming\SOLIDWORKS 20XX”) and verify that the folder is accessible by the user.

If not accessible, set read and write permissions under folder properties for that particular user with the help from system administrator.

Another cause is if you use Copy Settings Wizard to import settings from another computer, then in some cases the path is not appropriate for your computer. Then edit the registry under “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SOLIDWORKS\SOLIDWORKS 20XX\ExtReferences\SOLIDWORKS Journal Folders” and set the default path to
“C:\Users\[User-Name]\AppData\Roaming\SOLIDWORKS 20XX”

Hope this blog will help you understand the cause and also the solution for this issue. If the above solution does not solve the issue, contact your Value Added Reseller.
